We’ve Gone Off The Deep End
Dive into gratitude this holiday season as we thank the ocean for inspiring, humbling, and supporting us.
We’re flipping the script by changing Black Friday to Green Friday. In line with our mission to stop single-use products from polluting our planet, we’re giving back this holiday season.
Instead of contributing to over-consumption, the leading cause of pollution in our waterways, LastSwab will donate all of our surplus income to The Ocean Cleanup.
The Largest Cleanup In History
The Ocean Cleanup is a non-profit organization invested in developing and implementing technologies to remove plastic from our world’s ocean.
The Ocean Cleanup recognizes the negative impact of plastic pollution on the environment, the economy, and our health. Using innovative systems, this organization removes existing plastic from the ocean and prevents more plastic from entering the ocean via rivers.
The Ocean Cleanup estimates they can remove 50% of waste from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch every 5 years.
Why Choose Ocean Conservation?
The ocean is teeming with life. Without it, we can’t survive. Check out these facts to get a sense of how impactful the ocean really is to our survival.
The ocean produces over 50% of the planet’s oxygen and stores 50 times more carbon dioxide than the atmosphere.
It regulates the climate and weather patterns by transporting heat from the equator to the poles.
Medicines that help fight cancer, arthritis, heart disease, and Alzheimers use ingredients found in the ocean.
The ocean and waterways support innumerable ecosystems that we and other species depend on for survival.
The ocean is home to more than 95% of all life.
There are so many more reasons to appreciate and clean our oceans. We use it for recreation and to enjoy its natural beauty. It is vital, life-giving, and awe-inspiring. Cleaning our oceans is essential.
How Bad Is Ocean Pollution, Really?
In order to understand the impact pollution has had on our oceans and waterways, it’s important to get the facts on where all this pollution is coming from. Let’s check the facts:
80% of ocean pollution comes from land-based sources
6.5 million tons of waste enter the ocean each year, much of it plastic which does not decompose in water
There are 200 known “dead zones” in the world ocean. Dead zones are areas of the ocean that have insufficient oxygen to support life
Rivers carry 4 million tons of plastic waste into the ocean every year. 10 rivers are estimated to be 90% of the polluting rivers.
What Can We Do To Help Preserve The Ocean?
Yes, those facts are pretty disheartening. But don’t lose hope! Fortunately, there are plenty of ways you as the end consumer can help preserve the ocean.
Research Brands You Support
We’re talking about brands you support financially. Every dollar is a vote. Consider buying from brands that strive for sustainability and work hard to lower their carbon footprint. Check out these eco-friendly gift ideas from brands we can get behind.
Reduce Waste At Home
Did you know 550 billion cotton swabs are produced every year? After one use, they head for the landfill, or worse, somehow make it into our waterways. By switching to reusable consumer goods, you are limiting the amount of waste that gets washed into the ocean.
Stop Single Use
Opting for reusable products reduces the demand for over-production of disposable goods. The majority of waste and pollution is produced at the industrial level. Even regulations by the EPA and other environmental agencies cannot eliminate industrial waste. By buying reusable goods, you can help reduce unnecessary pollution.
