Perfumes in Laundry Detergents: Smelly, But Not In A Good Way

Perfumes in laundry detergents may seem like a nice touch, but they can actually be harmful to our health and the environment.

Firstly, perfumes in laundry detergents can cause skin irritation, allergies, and respiratory problems. According to a study by the American Academy of Dermatology, 1 in 5 Americans have sensitive skin, and many of them can develop rashes or hives from the harsh chemicals in perfumes.

“According to a study by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), nearly 75% of laundry detergents in the U.S. contain the chemical 1,4-dioxane, which is considered a possible carcinogen.”

Additionally, the World Health Organization (WHO) states that fragrances are one of the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis. These fragrances can also trigger asthma or other respiratory issues.

Secondly, perfumes in laundry detergents can have a negative impact on the environment. These fragrances are not biodegradable and can contribute to water pollution.

According to the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC), synthetic fragrances are among the top 5 pollutants found in indoor air. When our clothes are washed, the perfumes in the detergent can end up in our rivers and streams, causing harm to aquatic life.

“The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has listed the chemical ingredients found in many fragrances, such as phthalates and synthetic musks, as potential environmental pollutants that can accumulate in water and soil, and harm aquatic life.”

Lastly, perfumes in laundry detergents are not necessary for clean clothes. In fact, many natural alternatives such as essential oils or vinegar can be used to naturally freshen and clean clothes.

According to a study by the University of Washington, vinegar and baking soda are just as effective as traditional laundry detergents in removing bacteria and odors from clothes.

In conclusion, it's best to avoid using laundry detergents with perfumes and opt for more natural alternatives. Not only will this be better for our health, but it will also be better for the environment.

It's important to be mindful of the products we use and their impact on our health and the environment. Using fragrance-free laundry detergents is a simple step we can take to make a difference.
